Do messaging applications increase your HIPAA liability risks?

Popular messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp didn’t exist a few years ago. These new tools can facilitate quick communication both personally and inside organizations.

However, if your organization is using these new messaging platforms, common HIPAA concerns extend to these channels including loss or theft of mobile devices, lack of encryption of messages and network security.

So are healthcare facilities relegated to old technology, such as pagers, and other more traditional forms of communication? 

Certainly not, but compliance policies and practices are essential, according to legal experts.
