Today, hackers are proving they can blow through companies’ security systems, erode consumer trust and abruptly end careers for the people in charge.
Avid Life Media CEO’s Noel Biderman joined a growing list of senior execs who have lost their jobs amid the fallout from cyberattacks. Avid Life is the parent company of the infidelity website Ashley Madison.
“The boards have recognized the risk that comes with a major record-compromising security breach — and when it’s elevated to the board level, the ultimate responsibility falls on the CEO,” Forrester Research senior security analyst Tyler Shields told The Washington Post.
When it comes to sensitive business data, it should be encrypted, writes Arik Hesseldahl.
“Done right, encryption makes sensitive data practically useless to an attacker, even after they’ve broken into a system.”
